You're busy, I'm busy. Everyone's busy. Who has time to look up all the Homestar Halloween Toons one by one.

Don't Worry! They are all listed here.

And speaking of Halloween... tell me again why Island of Lost Souls isn't a famous Criterion sort of DVD? Instead we have to find skanky copies on the web. That isn't right.

Mars Attacks!

Not just a wonderful movie but the best Wally Wood trading cards in the history of man!!

Hey! Looking for spooky old pictures of what people thought demons looked like? Check out the image search at Cornell University's Witchcraft Collection!

You would like to view a pixellated Danish film from 1922 about witches and such? Look no further! Herewith is Haxan for you... absolutely free!

And of course some legendary Bruce Haack compilations for your Halloween soundtrack. They work very well.

Happy Halloween!

Amanita Design has a new game!

The only computer games I care about are from them. Rejoice!

Boingboing has some of the sketches and they are awesome!!!

Spooky NUMBERS radio - you try to figure out what it means.

Spookiest pictures you could ask for.

Best Halloween game for you and the kids.

The Weebles Haunted House. If you don't know, just skip this one.

There is a bootleg DVD of a whole mess of Warner Brothers Halloween cartoons in one place. Not that I would endorse a bootleg. But until WB gets its act together, check this out.

Nosferatu, the Crown Prince of scary movies, is available for free! Public domain and everything! Just download and shiver with creepiness.

I only live in Massachusetts. I accept no blame for what goes on here.

I hope everyone already knows about the Halloween contest over at Journey Round My Skull! Submit your entries early. This will be magnificent.

I like all these redrawn comic book covers!

Thanks boingboing for letting me know that this exists!

Thanks again to Drawn!

Marc Craste, the brains behind Jo Jo in the Stars and the Pica Towers series, has a new short out called Stuck on a Sunday. You can see some of it at the Studio AKA site (it's a Flash site - click on the Stuck on a Sunday bit on the lower left). Great atmospheric animation as always from MC MC!

Thanks to Ian at Animation Blog for the heads up!

I don't know much about the Lauenstein brothers, except I saw Balance at animation festivals in the 1980s. Shane Acker seems happy to name-check them at the New York Times so I bet there is more to them than I know about. Try some!

Are Mokkelbost at A Journey Round My Skull! Have some collage!

These works of art were commissioned to be *permanently* installed in a new school/kindergarten building. What?! All I had in my kindergarten was a water fountain and some beanbag chairs!

Rebecca Sugar is amazing.

Check out this short animation, and then watch it again so that it makes sense. Then eat a mound of mayonnaise. I love this.

Thanks to Cartoon Brew!

Negativland Booping on KPFA!

I find myself posting about Coldplay, only days after posting about U2. This is very wrong. However, someone in management at these publishing conglomerates knows good animation when they see it! Behold this kindly video by Shynola.

Thanks to Drawn! for the awareness.

U2 - I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight from David OReilly on Vimeo.

Oh I don't give a flying handshake from U2 (sorry Bono if you are reading this) but the video by David O'Reilly ROX my boxers! YAR! Indeed.

Thanks Cartoon Brew.

Strange Tales Max is full of art-school superheroes!!

Marvel Comics has lifted the rotted log of mainstream comicbook illustration
to see what is wriggling underneath - and look what they found! Ho ho!

My new favorite.

Skeleton is from Frightfiction blog.

Go read A Journey Round My Skull! It is a treasure trove.

Salvador Bartolozzi makes Pinocchio correctly. I hope you agree!

Also from the Skull blog: Jiri Trnka! Fab.

Absolutely marvelous. Thanks Drawn! via Vera Brosgol.

Vasily Aksyonov

Today is a good day to read Aksyonov's great, strange novels: The Burn is great, also The Destruction of Pompeii. He passed away on Monday.

Big thanks to VA for some great books!

Stephan Britt

His new website isn't ready. His blog, while marvelous at first,
kind of withered on the proverbial vine.

How to get caught up with the wizard of Louisiana, Stephan Britt? I finally figured it out - go to his Flickr account. Whew!

Super puppet action! With the Fluorescent Hill gang!

You remember... the guys who made the dancing cupcake video.

Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Please read Liz Prince. You can do it! You'll thank yourself.

Image is stolen from her website. Please don't sue me Liz Prince!!!

RHODE MONTIJO!

This is marvelous - T-T-Tartamudo for you and you and you!!

I am glad I read Drawn! because that's where I heard about this.

They also feature the new JibJab animation about Obama. To my eyes, it is funny but it sure looks a LOT like some animation I have loved and watched over and over, the astonishing Stevie and Zoya adventures by Ace Conrad. Maybe Ace works for JibJab now? What do I know. But it looks to me like they should tip their enormously influential Hat to Mr Conrad in the microsecond before they launch into their infomercial selling e-cards.

This is pretty much what Facebook is for. So I can find out about artists such as Scott Campbell, etc etc. The rest is pooty.

Except for Someday Funnies of course!

Chris McDonnell at McD Studios makes some good mess. In case you are not ready for lovable animation.

Chris McD Animation Reel from Chris McD on Vimeo.

Lovely animation by Stefan Gruber, if you are in the mood for loveliness. Perhaps you have had a hard day. Here.

This looks jazzy, don't you think?

Friday, June 12, 2009

Well... this fellow Shane Prigmore pretty much sums up why I love animation. And art. He is in charge of making characters have emotions. What sort of job is that? That is a job? Wha?

Wednesday, June 10, 2009

YOW! Mat Brinkman's astonishing serial comic MULTIFORCE, which was in Paper Rodeo back in the day (what, four years ago?) is now finally available as a book! Well all right!
Never thought of looking for Seth Scriver's stuff in youtube until today. Der!

Plus, I like this postcard by prolific Fantagraphics book editor Jacob Covey, and it also looks like Seth's postcards. So I thought it sort of fit.

I hope everyone loves Thomas Herpich drawings as much as me... but did you know he shares a blog with his brother? And that his brother is also very spirited and talented?

Now you know!

Drawn videos by Marc Bell? Awesome! Where? Here! Great!

Another marvelous animation from Ronald Grandpey!

Wednesday, June 03, 2009

Sorry I'm Late! great stop-motion from Tomas Mankovsky - thanks to Boing Gboing for finding it first... I especially love the "making of" trial runs. Next snow day with the kids, I know what we're doing.

More cleverness here. Warning: robot movie comes with an EASTERN-EUROPEAN-STYLE SAD ENDING. Don't share with small children unless they are nihilists already.
Nelson Boles

This one time... from nelson boles on Vimeo.

Why would someone who is 19 years old be able to do this? It is a marvel and a wonder.

More here... thanks to Warner's lawyers for removing the sound. I'm sure Herbie Mann is breathing a sigh of relief.

Have you ever dropped your heart in the dust, and then had to nervously pick the lint off it while meeting a lovely girl? Lovesick is for you. Thanks to Ian at Animation Blog for noticing this gem.

Thursday, May 07, 2009

SWATPAZ.NET?! is David Ferguson. Super great! Thanks Cartoon Brew!

Wednesday, May 06, 2009

Hey kids! There's a new Joel Trussell video for Kid 606 out there, so stop what you're doing. You know if it's Joel Trussell, it will be delightful!

Kudos to Cartoon Brew for noticing this development.

Personally, I had missed this one for Jakob Dylan of all people.

Bogdan Raczynski

To anyone who has not yet tasted the musical nectar of BR, please begin with his pleasantly-arranged website. Good luck finding his records tho. They are lovely!

I am of the opinion that Mattel's 1978 Magical Musical Thing makes a rare recorded contribution on Samurai Math Beats, track 6: Sayonara Tsutara. One man's opinion, is all.
Sally Cruikshank

Thanks to Animation Blog for reminding me of Sally Cruikshank's lovely and mysterious Face Like A Frog short from 1987. It needs to be seen in higher definition to be appreciated, though. The version I found on youtube doesn't do it justice!

There are some helpful links from BoingBoing from last fall too.

The picture above is Anemone from her Flickr page.

From Cartoon Brew: try to not sing the Aeroplane Jelly song for the rest of your life. You will sing this song. For the rest of your life. You're welcome!

From Drawn (by way of Splog): riot of colors from Emmanuele Luzzati. Lovely!!

Thanks Drawn!

Just getting around to reading last year's profile of Thomas Heatherwick in the New Yorker. Who wouldn't want to design things after looking at his stuff?

Friday, April 03, 2009

Roll them dice! Thanks Matt Hammill. Everything you do is wonderful!

Minilogue - Animals from ljudbilden on Vimeo.

There are some terrific making-of videos at Shy The Sun's website, in case you were planning to make anything as awesome as their stuff. I could watch their films all day.

This is just perfect. A bunch of mad Russian graphics from 1912 or so. I'm so glad I happened to do a Google image search of "Russian death."

Thursday, February 19, 2009

Well I think this is tremendous: David O'Reilly is the guy who made Octocat, a classic. And he is on to bigger and better things.

SCINTILLATION from Xavier Chassaing on Vimeo.

Yes there are more episodes of Trixie and the Treetrunks available here. Long live Miss Pussycat!

And don't let another holiday pass by without sharing North Pole Nutrias with your family. I never miss a chance.

There hasn't been much to pique my interest lately... until this.

Good ol' EnglishRussia blog wins again.

Also, I need to plug the new release from my friend Lineland. It is super wonderful and will help you get through February with pleasant memories.
