Azur et Asmar is the latest from Michel Ocelot, the wizard who came up with the great Kirikou.

This man really has a knack for bringing gorgeous 2D illustrations into 3D, but just barely. It always feels like when you were a kid, and you could lose yourself in a well-illustrated book because the pictures had a life of their own.


Plus, he's got a droll, gentle sense of humor that makes this stuff immensely appealing to softies like myself. Take a look, it's free!

Hoorah! Here is the latest iteration of my animation must-see list - since there's so much amazing material that has become available on DVD from other planets and eras since my last update.

My heartfelt plea: anyone out there with a soul should at least eyeball this stuff. There are some inspiring and hilarious items that don't get the exposure they deserve, especially my new #1 guy Yuri Norstein (at left), who is, strangely, alive and making stuff.
