I can't believe how amazing the character design is for Hellboy II. I am not really a comic-book movie nerd. I really liked Hellboy, and I think Guillermo del Toro is the real deal (as is Mike Mignola!).
But this new movie has the best alien creatures I have seen since 1977, and I am as excited about seeing these weird things come to life as I was when I was 7 years old waiting to see Star Wars. Look at these guys!
Plus, check out the intersection of Gary Panter and Marvel Comics. I like to think of myself as more of a RAW guy than a superhero guy, but this meeting of the minds has Jack Kirby written all over it.
Afanasy Nikitin was the first Russian to explore India, which he wound up doing in about 1466.
In history books you will find very little about his dealings with the Shuisky sisters, or Alnus Rugosa, or Das Brick, because I made them up.
Ali Qushji and Perkin Warbeck and Jami the Persian Poet were real people, who sadly never really had anything to do with Russia or Afanasy Nikitin. The Kreml, while a real place, was probably not as fun as it appears herein.
So abandon all pretence of learning about historical Russia, ye who enter here.
